Soon, around the world, celebrations will begin in honor of the birth of one called the Christ.
From the vantage point of my warm home, I am remembering those sleeping in the cold in refugee camps in Syria, or without cover, whether in the Philippines or in Philadelphia. How should I, could I honor the birth of One whose concern was constantly for others. Words fail me: my mouth is mute, my mind and heart uncertain. A glance at the Christmas tree, decorated by the children with trinkets, does not begin to answer my questions.
The video above is an unusual recording of "the Jesus Prayer", sung by a Ukrainian nun, singing, "Jesus, Jesus, Son of God, have mercy upon us", as opposed to the prayer of a single individual (for example, a monk in his cell), for example: "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner."
For a few moments, it is possible to join in a repeated prayer for mercy for all of us, thanks to Sister Tereza Vodjana and her fellow-parishioners.
